Sanwo-Olu Assesses Independence Bridge Repairs, Apologises for Gridlock Impact

Date:

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, April 3, 2025, visited the Independence Bridge to assess the ongoing repair works and address the severe traffic congestion experienced by residents the previous day.

The governor arrived at the site at exactly 9:59 am, accompanied by government officials. The repairs, being carried out by Messrs Buildwell Construction under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works, have been causing heavy traffic disruptions since their commencement on April 1.

In a post shared on social media by Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his apologies to the public for the traffic gridlock caused by the repairs. He reassured Lagos residents that the decision to undertake the repairs, which has been in planning for over three years, was necessary to prevent a potential disaster due to the bridge’s deteriorating condition.

Sanwo-Olu also revealed that alternative routes, which have been cleared for smoother passage, will be maintained, and additional traffic officers and security personnel will be deployed, similar to the efforts seen during the December period.

The governor urged residents to adhere to traffic regulations during this period, advising that offices could operate remotely to ease the congestion caused by the ongoing works. He assured the public that measures are in place to minimize inconvenience as much as possible during the repair process.

The Independence Bridge, a critical infrastructure in Lagos, had to be closed for repairs to address safety concerns, and the repairs are expected to last for an extended period. Sanwo-Olu’s visit aims to underscore the government’s commitment to resolving the issue while maintaining public safety and order on Lagos roads.
