The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ruled that the petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, has failed to meet the constitutional requirements.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, INEC confirmed that the petition did not satisfy the provisions of Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“The petition for the recall of the Senator representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended),” INEC stated.
This announcement effectively ends the recall attempt against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has been a prominent political figure in Kogi Central. The recall process, which allows constituents to remove an elected legislator, requires stringent conditions, including the signatures of a significant percentage of registered voters in the district.
The failed recall attempt comes amid heightened political activities in Kogi State, where Akpoti-Uduaghan has faced both support and opposition. Some political observers believe that this development will reinforce her position in the Senate while potentially fueling further political debates in the region.
