Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has pledged swift justice for the victims of the recent Uromi killings, confirming that 14 suspects have been arrested and will be transferred to Abuja for further investigation.
The governor made this known on Monday during a condolence visit to Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, at his Maitama residence in Abuja. The visit followed the tragic killing of innocent travelers, reportedly hunters from Kano State, who were attacked in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, while on their way for Sallah celebrations.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate and condemnable,” Okpebholo assured that both the Edo State Government and federal authorities were taking decisive action.
“The President is not happy about this incident and has ordered drastic measures. The Inspector-General of Police has also swung into action, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (CID) is handling the case. So far, 14 suspects have been arrested and will be taken to Abuja for interrogation,” Okpebholo stated.
The governor also announced that a committee had been set up to provide support for the families of the victims.
In response, Senator Barau Jibrin emphasized the need for justice, urging the Edo State Government to ensure the perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
“This barbaric act must not go unpunished. Bringing those responsible to justice will serve as a deterrent to others. I also appreciate your commitment to assisting the families of the victims,” Barau said.
He further acknowledged that Edo has historically been a peaceful place for people from different parts of the country and expressed confidence that such violence would not occur again under Okpebholo’s leadership.
Governor Okpebholo also revealed plans to meet with Kano State Governor to discuss further interventions regarding the incident.
