Obasa Insists on Lawsuit Against Meranda Despite Tinubu’s Intervention

Date:

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in resolving the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa remains committed to pursuing his lawsuit against former Speaker Mojisola Meranda and other lawmakers.

Obasa’s legal counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), dismissed speculations that the Speaker would withdraw the case, stating that his team was awaiting the court’s judgment.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Sunday, Fashanu confirmed that arguments in the case had been concluded at the Lagos State High Court, where Justice Yetunde Pinheiro had reserved judgment.

“We are just waiting for the judgment. The court will communicate the date to us,” he said.

When asked if Obasa was still considering withdrawing the case, he firmly responded, “That does not arise again. He’s not withdrawing.”

Tinubu had stepped in to settle the leadership dispute that followed Obasa’s removal as Speaker on January 13, 2025, and Meranda’s subsequent election. After 49 days in office, Meranda resigned, paving the way for Obasa’s return on March 3, 2025.

Following the resolution, all 40 lawmakers met with Tinubu in Abuja on March 12, where he further urged reconciliation. Sources had suggested that Obasa’s lawsuit was expected to be dropped as part of the settlement.

A former Lagos APC Chairman, Otunba Henry Ajomale, expressed confidence that Obasa would eventually withdraw the case.

“Since Mr. President intervened, I believe the case will be withdrawn soon,” Ajomale told journalists.

However, Obasa’s legal stance suggests otherwise, raising uncertainties over the political stability within the Assembly.

Since Obasa’s return, the House of Assembly has remained inactive, with plenary sessions suspended indefinitely since March 3, 2025.

According to House Clerk Ottun Babatunde, the Assembly is expected to resume after the Sallah break. However, committee activities have reportedly continued during the recess.

Meanwhile, sources indicate that Obasa is currently on a pilgrimage in Mecca, adding another layer of uncertainty to the unfolding political drama in the Lagos Assembly.
