Fubara Vows to Protect Rivers Residents from Political Disruptions

Date:

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reassured residents that the ongoing political crisis in the state will not weaken them but instead make them stronger. He also warned that certain individuals are attempting to incite violence to disrupt the livelihoods of the people, vowing that such efforts would not succeed.

Fubara made this declaration on Monday while receiving Muslim leaders from 20 Islamic-based groups, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, at his private residence in Port Harcourt. The visit was part of Eid-el-Fitri celebrations, and his remarks were contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi.

Addressing the delegation, Fubara urged patience and faith, stating, “This season is one of love, sharing, and sacrifice. You have come to share in our pain and have made a great sacrifice through your prayers. As Christians, we believe that everything happens for a purpose, and I strongly believe that this situation is leading us toward a greater purpose.”

He acknowledged the emotional toll of the political tensions but encouraged steadfastness, emphasizing that divine forces may be guiding events. “No matter what we see, we must remain steadfast. In all things, we give glory to Almighty God. I believe that, in the end, we will emerge stronger,” he said.

Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to justice and equality, saying, “We believe in egalitarianism, and if our beliefs bring us some pain, so be it. The most important thing is that we stand on the side of truth and righteousness.”

He also expressed regret over his inability to formally reach out to the Muslim community during their celebrations but assured them that religious inclusivity in governance would be strengthened once the current uncertainties were resolved.

The governor warned against individuals attempting to provoke violence in the state, urging residents to resist being used as tools of destabilization. “Their goal is to create problems and deny people their means of livelihood. We will not allow that. We will continue to operate peacefully and respect constituted authority to ensure that our state remains a model for others in Nigeria,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of the Muslim community, Nasir Uhor declared their solidarity with Fubara, offering prayers and support as he navigates the political crisis. Uhor praised Fubara’s inclusive governance approach, contrasting it with the previous administration’s stance on religion.

He further called on President Bola Tinubu to review the emergency rule in Rivers State and restore Fubara’s full authority, emphasizing that despite the crisis, the governor had continued to govern effectively.

The visit concluded with prayers for Fubara, his family, Rivers State, and Nigeria as a whole.
