Chelsea have reignited their pursuit of Barcelona defender Jules Kounde as they look to strengthen their backline ahead of the summer transfer window. The Blues are also keeping tabs on Bournemouth’s rising star Dean Huijsen, according to reports.
Kounde, 26, was previously a top target for Chelsea in 2022, but Barcelona hijacked the deal, signing him from Sevilla for £42 million. Now, with manager Enzo Maresca eager to add a versatile defender who can play both at centre-back and full-back, the French international has resurfaced as a prime candidate.
Despite excelling as a right-back under former Barca boss Xavi and continuing in that role under current manager Hansi Flick, Kounde reportedly remains open to a move where he would play in his preferred centre-back position. Although he is “very happy” at Barcelona and keen on signing a new contract, Chelsea’s financial capabilities could prove tempting, especially given Barcelona’s well-documented financial struggles.
Should a move for Kounde fail, Chelsea are also monitoring 19-year-old Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen, who has impressed in the Premier League. However, they could face competition from Real Madrid, who are also tracking the young Spaniard.
With Thiago Silva’s departure leaving a void in Chelsea’s defence, the club appears determined to secure reinforcements, setting up a potentially busy summer transfer window at Stamford Bridge.
