Iheanacho scores first league goal in 17 months

Date:

Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho on Saturday opened his goals account with English Championship side Middlesbrough in a 2-1 home win over Oxford United.

Iheanacho drew Middlesbrough level in the 48th minute after Oxford had taken the lead 10 minutes earlier in what was his eighth league game of the season.

He raced into the box to tap home a Sam-Iling Junior cross from the left. He was emotional netting his first league goal.

The goal was his first league goal since he last scored in Leicester City’s 3-1 win at Swansea in a Sky Bet Championship game in October 2023.

The home win ensured that ‘Boro stayed barely out of the promotion playoffs bracket with 57 points from 39 matches, same points as sixth-placed West Bromwich Albion, who are within the playoffs bracket.

Iheanacho played 23 Championship games last season for Leicester City, scored five goals and provided one assist before making his move to Sevilla.
