The Lagos State Government has announced plans to install 3,000 e-police and speed limit cameras across the state as part of efforts to improve traffic law enforcement.
The Director of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Engr. Akin-George Fashola, disclosed this on Tuesday during a transportation-focused program on Traffic Radio 96.1 FM. He stated that the cameras would help monitor and curb traffic violations, ensuring safer roads for residents.
According to him, speed limit cameras have already been installed at key locations, including Alapere-Ogudu Road (80 km/h inbound Alausa and 60 km/h inbound Iyana Oworo) and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (60 km/h). Similarly, e-police cameras are operational at Allen Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road in Ikeja to detect red light violations and other infractions.
Fashola emphasized that motorists caught exceeding speed limits would be fined ₦50,000. However, he noted that offenders who believe they were wrongly penalized could contest the fines by providing evidence.
Addressing concerns on enforcement, he clarified that commercial vehicles are not exempt, revealing that an average of 50 commercial buses are apprehended daily for various traffic violations.
In addition to stricter traffic monitoring, the VIS Director announced the introduction of an online roadworthiness recertification system for pre-existing vehicle owners. This new system allows vehicle owners to renew their roadworthiness certificates without visiting a VIS office, streamlining the process.
Furthermore, he highlighted a new auto verification service designed to help individuals purchasing used vehicles obtain a comprehensive history of the vehicle before making a decision.
Fashola urged Lagosians to visit the VIS website or any of the 45 VIS centers across the state for accurate information and assistance.
