The recently reinstated National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has called for party unity, stating that the internal crisis within the PDP has been resolved.
Anyanwu, a close ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, made this appeal in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Monday. He urged party members to focus on strengthening the PDP instead of engaging in coalition talks for the 2027 elections, indirectly addressing recent discussions led by Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai to challenge President Bola Tinubu.
The Supreme Court reinstated Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary last Friday after overturning an Appeal Court ruling that had favored Sunday Ude-Okoye. The court declared that political party leadership disputes should not be handled by the judiciary, effectively settling months of internal strife within the PDP.
Following the ruling, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) affirmed Anyanwu’s reinstatement, emphasizing the need for internal resolution of party leadership matters. Reacting to the judgment, Anyanwu expressed relief, calling for reconciliation.
“From the Supreme Court, which is the highest court, I am the National Secretary of the PDP. I hold no grudges against anyone. Now is the time for us to unite and reposition the party,” he said.
While reaffirming PDP’s strength at all levels, Anyanwu dismissed claims of the party joining a coalition to remove Tinubu, stating, “The PDP is not part of any coalition. Those advocating for a coalition should instead join the PDP.”
Members of the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, also emphasized the importance of reconciliation.
A NEC member, who requested anonymity, urged party leaders to move forward, warning that continued infighting could harm the PDP’s image.
Osadolor added, “Now that the Supreme Court has ruled, it is time for all of us to mend our differences. Healing is essential, and we must move forward as one party.”
With the court ruling settled, Anyanwu has resumed office, and an NWC meeting is expected soon to address pending issues and chart a way forward for the party.
