Sunshine Stars forward, Mathew Samuel, is hoping to earn a spot in Nigeria’s Flying Eagles squad as preparations for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast intensify.
The teenage striker has been in impressive form since breaking into the Sunshine Stars’ first team, scoring four goals — two in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and two in the Ondo State FA Cup.
He came on as a half time substitute in Sunshine’s 1-0 loss to Bendel Insurance courtesy of a 21st minute strike by Kayode Solomon.
Speaking after the game, the 18-year-old said, “It will be a dream to make the final list of the Flying Eagles squad.
“I believe that I can help the team acheive its aims.”
Samuel began his football journey at Opeyemi FC, a local club in Ore, Ondo State, before moving to Bluewall FC. His performances there earned him a move to Sunshine Stars U-19, where he quickly progressed to the senior team.
Meanwhile, the Flying Eagles are set to commence a training camp in Katsina this week as part of their build-up to the U-20 AFCON, which will take place from April 26 to May 18.
The team recently had a brief break after playing two friendlies against Ivory Coast, winning one 2-0 and losing the other by the same scoreline.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu will be looking to fine-tune his squad ahead of a challenging Group B campaign, where Nigeria will face Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa.
With competition for places heating up, Samuel will be hoping his recent performances earn him a call-up to represent his country on the continental stage.
