NAFDAC Cracks Down on Fake Rice Syndicate, Arrests Salesgirl in Port Harcourt

Date:

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in collaboration with the producers of Big Bull Rice, has uncovered large-scale sales of counterfeit Big Bull Rice in Port Harcourt.

In a series of raids carried out in Woji, Mile 3, and Mile 1 markets, NAFDAC operatives seized over 120 fake bags of rice from more than ten shops, transporting them to the agency’s Zonal Office for further investigation.

According to a statement released on Thursday, a major breakthrough occurred at a shop along the YKC axis of Woji, identified as a key distribution hub for the counterfeit rice. Upon inspection, officials discovered empty counterfeit Big Bull Rice bags alongside other brands such as Cap Rice, Stallion Rice, Tomato Rice, and Mama Pride.

A salesgirl, identified as Ogechi Okafor, was apprehended at the scene, while several rebagging tools, including sewing and sealing machines, a generator, a stove, and thread, were also recovered from the premises.

NAFDAC’s Rivers State Coordinator, Pharm. Emmanuel Onogwu, outlined distinguishing features of the original Big Bull Rice, including a unique shiny ribbon across the threaded top, superior bag quality, and an authentic logo. He warned that counterfeit versions often come from unverified sources and may be treated with harmful chemicals to enhance their appearance.

He further urged consumers to remain vigilant and report suspicious rice products to authorities to safeguard public health.
