The National Judicial Council (NJC) has refuted claims that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, ordered the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and his return to Kenya.
In a statement on Thursday, NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, Mrs. Kemi Ogedengbe, dismissed the reports as false, clarifying that the CJN has no involvement in Kanu’s trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
“The media report is a figment of the writer’s imagination, as there are no court proceedings, decisions, or judgments where such statements were made,” the NJC stated.
The council further stressed that Justice Kekere-Ekun neither presided over Kanu’s case at the Supreme Court nor issued any formal communication to the Kenyan government regarding his arrest and trial.
This clarification comes amid ongoing legal proceedings surrounding Kanu’s detention, with no official directive from the judiciary on his release or extradition.
