Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu, notched his third Premier League goal for Southampton who suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Saint Marys stadium on Saturday.
Onuachu was making his 19th EPL appearance of the season and his 30th league outing since he joined from Belgian club Genk in 2023 for €18m.
He came off the substitute’s bench at half-time pulled a goal back for Saints in the 75th minute after Tyler Dibling’s shot came back off the post, but Wolves held on for the final 15 minutes to claim an important win.
Wolves had gone two goals up with a brace from Jorgen Larson before Onuachu’s goal.
The defeat was Southampton’s ninth consecutive home loss – their 24th loss of the EPL campaign which sees the Saints become only the fourth side in English top-flight history to suffer the same shambolic run in the same season, after Birmingham in 1985-86, Wolves in 2011-12 and Watford in 2021-22.
Southampton remain on nine points – two fewer than Derby’s record Premier League low and 17 adrift of Vitor Pereira’s Wolves, whose position in the table is far less precarious than it was this time last month.
It remains to be seen if Onuachu remains at the club for next season as his contract expires on June 30, 2026.
