FG Releases 30% Mobilization for 2nd Niger Bridge Bypass Construction – Umahi

Date:

The Federal Government has released 30% mobilization funds for the construction of two critical bypasses on the 2nd Niger Bridge, linking the Asaba-Benin and Enugu-Onitsha dual carriageways. This was disclosed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during an inspection of ongoing federal road projects in Rivers State.

Umahi commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the funds, emphasizing that the completion of the project would be a major win for the country, particularly for residents of the Niger Delta and Anambra.

“Good news for the Niger Delta and Anambra people—the Second Niger Bridge section 2A and 2B are now being handled by CCECC and CJC, with 30% mobilization already released,” Umahi stated.

Additionally, the federal government has assured that the long-awaited reconstruction of the East-West Road—severely damaged by past flooding—will be completed between December 2025 and March 2026.

During his two-day project inspection, Umahi visited key road construction sites, including the Eleme-Onne road (handled by RCC), the Bodo-Bonny road (Julius Berger), and the Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway (CCECC).

Expressing satisfaction with the quality of work being executed, the minister reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to infrastructure development in the Niger Delta region. He also highlighted efforts to empower local contractors, noting that some have performed as well as—if not better than—their foreign counterparts.

Umahi further revealed that the government had completed and paid for a 47km section of the East-West Road, which is now ready for commissioning in May. He tasked SETRACO, the contractor handling another section, with completing the remaining 22km stretch by November 2025.

He assured that ongoing efforts to raise flood-prone sections of the road by one meter would prevent future washouts, citing lessons learned from previous climate-induced damages.

“We are very happy with the progress under President Tinubu. His commitment to infrastructure is clear, and we want the Niger Delta people to appreciate his dedication to the East-West Road and other national projects,” Umahi concluded.
