A yet-to-be-identified woman who plunged into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge was recovered dead on Thursday, despite rescue efforts by marine police officers.
The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m. near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront, drew immediate attention from emergency responders. Eyewitnesses at the scene suggested that the woman’s actions pointed to an apparent suicide.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, officers stationed in the area quickly launched a rescue operation and retrieved the woman’s body. However, medical personnel from UNILAG confirmed her death upon arrival at their facility.
Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development, stating that the body has been transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba for preservation.
“The marine police officers stationed in the area responded swiftly, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead by UNILAG medical doctors in the presence of officers from the Sabo Police Division,” Hundeyin said.
As of press time, the exact reason behind the tragic incident remains unclear. Authorities have yet to identify the deceased, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
