Motorists and commuters along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were thrown into panic on Tuesday evening as a tanker explosion engulfed the Otedola Bridge in flames.
The explosion, which occurred around 7 p.m., was captured in multiple videos shared on social media, showing thick smoke and raging fire at the scene. While the exact cause of the incident remains unconfirmed, eyewitnesses and social media users suggested that a petrol-laden tanker was involved.
An X user, Tonye Oliver, described the scene as a “major disaster,” while another, Pamilerin Adegoke, urged road users to avoid the bridge, citing safety concerns.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, stated in a brief message that emergency responders were already at the scene.
“Some sort of explosion. Awaiting Preliminary Report. LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team at the location,” Okunbor said.
As of the time of reporting, there were no official details on casualties or the extent of damage, but authorities urged commuters to use alternative routes while efforts to contain the fire continued.
