The Kaduna State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that it is unfazed by the defection of former governor Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), insisting that the party remains strong and focused on future elections.
El-Rufai announced his departure from the APC on Monday, citing a growing misalignment between his personal values and the party’s current direction. However, Kaduna APC Secretary, Yahaya Baba-Pate, dismissed concerns that the former governor’s exit would weaken the party’s influence in the state.
Speaking to journalists in Kaduna, Baba-Pate emphasized that the APC’s priority is securing victory for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani in the 2027 elections. He highlighted the steady influx of high-profile politicians joining the party, reinforcing its strength despite defections.
“We are unperturbed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection to another party. Our main focus is on how to deliver Kaduna to President Tinubu and Governor Sani in 2027,” he stated.
Baba-Pate further stressed that the APC in Kaduna remains strong under Governor Uba Sani’s inclusive leadership, and El-Rufai’s departure does not threaten the party’s stability.
“We are not disturbed and will not lose sleep over El-Rufai’s moves. The party continues to grow daily with new members joining,” he added.
El-Rufai’s defection has sparked political discussions in the state, but Kaduna APC insists it remains united and focused on consolidating its power ahead of the next election cycle.
