President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, as the Special Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform initiative.
The appointment, announced on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, is part of the administration’s broader effort to reform Nigeria’s livestock sector and drive national development.
Jega, 68, co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee alongside President Tinubu. The committee played a crucial role in shaping policies aimed at resolving longstanding conflicts between farmers and herders and improving sustainable livestock practices. Their recommendations led to the creation of the newly established Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.
With a distinguished career in academia and public service, Jega previously served as Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano. He is currently a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano.
Jega gained national and international recognition for his tenure as INEC Chairman from 2010 to 2015, during which he introduced significant electoral reforms that strengthened Nigeria’s democratic process. His experience in governance and policy implementation is expected to drive meaningful change in the livestock sector.
The appointment signals the administration’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s livestock challenges, promoting modernized agricultural practices, and ensuring food security in the country.
