Fresh details have emerged on why the security details of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Meranda Mojisola and several other VIPs in the state were withdrawn. Sources have confirmed that the decision was based on a lack of valid police approval rather than any political interference.
According to insider reports, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, issued a directive to withdraw police operatives assigned to VIPs who had been enjoying security protection without official clearance. The move was part of the new CP’s effort to enforce professionalism and due process within the police force.
“There are some traditional rulers in the state who have had police personnel guarding them for almost 20 years without approval,” a source revealed. “It was not just about the Speaker.”
The normal procedure requires VIPs seeking police protection to submit a formal request, after which approval is granted and officers are assigned. While the Speaker is entitled to security by law, official communication from the outgoing Assembly leadership was reportedly not sent to the police to confirm the new officeholders deserving of protection.
“In this instance, no such communication has been sent to the police, and that is probably why the officers withdrew, knowing they had no letter officially assigning them to that duty,” the source added.
As of the time of reporting, the Lagos State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the matter, and efforts to reach the Commissioner of Police and the Public Relations Officer for further clarification have been unsuccessful.
