Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was removed as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is poised to reclaim his position following high-level political interventions.
Daily Trust has gathered that Obasa’s security details have been restored, while those of his successor, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn, signaling an imminent leadership change in the Assembly.
Meranda, who made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly after Obasa’s impeachment, has not officially resigned. However, her removal appears inevitable following a resolution reached over the weekend by key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders.
At a meeting attended by former APC National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, ex-Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and some lawmakers, it was reportedly concluded that Obasa’s removal was unlawful and should be reversed.
Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that lawmakers were directed to reinstate Obasa. However, it remains unclear when the Assembly will reconvene to finalize the transition.
Tensions in the Assembly escalated two weeks ago when plenary was abruptly adjourned following a security operation by the Department of State Services (DSS). Meranda has since suspended legislative activities indefinitely.
With the latest developments, political observers anticipate a dramatic shift in the House leadership in the coming days.
