Customs Intercept N398m Worth of Cannabis Sativa in Lagos

Date:

The Nigeria Customs Service Western Marine Command has successfully intercepted 53 sacks of cannabis sativa, weighing 1,958kg and valued at N398 million, in Lagos.

The interception, which took place at Ilase Sea Beach, about 200 nautical miles from the Lagos Anchorage, was confirmed in a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Lomba Benjamin, on Friday.

Paul Bamisaiye, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, revealed that the contraband was seized on Thursday night at approximately 11pm.

Bamisaiye detailed that the smugglers attempted to flee the scene, abandoning their boat and jumping into the sea, but they were overpowered by the vigilant officers.

“The boat was quickly secured and brought to the office where it was found to contain 3,793 loaves of cannabis sativa, divided into 53 sacks and weighed 1,958kg.

“The duty paid value of the seizure is N398m,” Bamisaiye said.

He said that this interception marked the largest single operational seizure of cannabis sativa under his administration.

It highlights the ongoing efforts of the Western Marine Command’s officers, who have intensified their focus on combating smuggling in the region.

This seizure follows a similar operation two months ago when the command intercepted 15 sacks containing 1,021 loaves of cannabis sativa weighing 538kg and valued at N107 million.

The significant reduction in smuggling activities is attributed to the relentless efforts of the Customs officers, as well as their partnership with other law enforcement agencies.

Bamisaiye also praised the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and his management team for their continuous support in the fight against smuggling, including the provision of crucial resources and equipment to the command.

In line with established procedures, the seized cannabis sativa will be handed over to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further action.

Bamisaiye reiterated the command’s commitment to working alongside sister agencies to ensure the protection of the nation’s borders and curb the flow of illicit substances into the country.

The interception serves as a reminder of the Customs Service’s vigilance and dedication to tackling illegal drug trafficking in Nigeria.
