Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Olympic-standard 25,000-capacity stadium in Igbogene, Yenagoa, as part of activities marking the fifth anniversary of Governor Douye Diri’s administration.
The project, hailed by the Federal Government and the Nigeria Football Federation, is expected to boost sports development and economic growth in Bayelsa State.
Governor Diri reiterated his appeal for support from the federal government, the Niger Delta Development Commission, oil companies, and the private sector to help nurture young sporting talents.
Jonathan expressed excitement about the initiative, calling it a landmark project that will enhance Bayelsa’s status in sports. He urged the state government and contractors to uphold global standards and called for the establishment of a sports fund to support retired athletes and encourage youth participation in sports.
“This is an iconic project that will develop the state. Please do not rest on your laurels, as we want this stadium to meet the best standards,” Jonathan stated.
He also expressed hope that the project, set for completion in 24 months, would be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu upon completion.
Governor Diri described the stadium as a transformative development that aligns with his administration’s urbanisation, sports, and youth development goals. He emphasised its potential to generate jobs, stimulate local businesses, and create opportunities for aspiring athletes.
“Our situation should not be different from global practices where major brands sponsor sports and stadiums,” Diri said, urging multinational companies and federal intervention agencies to support the initiative.
The project received endorsements from the National Sports Commission Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Dikko, and NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, who commended Diri’s commitment to sports development. Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick also pledged support, emphasising the stadium’s national benefits.
Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Dr. Daniel Igali, highlighted the need for the stadium, noting that the Samson Siasia Sports Complex was no longer adequate.
He expressed confidence that the facility would elevate Bayelsa’s status in Nigerian sports and drive economic activities in the state.
