I inherited 13 years backlog of unsettled insurance claims – Egbetokun

Date:

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, recently revealed that his administration inherited a significant backlog of unsettled insurance claims, spanning 13 years, for the families of deceased police officers.

The backlog, which had accumulated from 2010 to 2023, left these families in financial distress.

Egbetokun described this situation as unacceptable, and his administration has since taken steps to address it by engaging insurance providers to enforce compliance.

“At the outset of this administration, we met an alarming backlog of unsettled insurance claims from 2010 to 2023.

“This unfortunate reality left the families of our deceased officers in financial distress, a situation we found unacceptable and determined to change.

“We took immediate steps to engage defaulting insurance providers and enforce compliance and through these determined efforts, we have made remarkable progress,” he said.

As part of their efforts, the police administration has already disbursed N17.8 billion to 6,465 beneficiaries across eight separate cheque presentations.

“Today’s presentation is the 9th phase of cheque presentation to the families of our fallen officers in the life of this administration, bringing the cumulative total to N20.8b, benefiting 7,171 families.

“This exercise is not merely a financial disbursement, but an affirmation of our promise to stand by the families of those who serve with honor and dignity,” he said.

On the day of the announcement, an additional N3 billion was allocated to 706 beneficiaries, covering claims from the years 2020 to 2024.

The total disbursed so far stands at N20.8 billion, benefiting 7,171 families.

Egbetokun also launched the Nigeria Police Insurance Claims Management Portal, a new digital platform aimed at improving the processing of insurance claims for police officers.

The portal is designed to increase efficiency, transparency, and accessibility, eliminating bottlenecks in the process.

Alongside the portal, a specialised training program was inaugurated for Insurance Desk Officers across the country, aimed at enhancing their knowledge and skills in insurance claims administration.

This initiative is part of the IG’s broader vision for digital transformation within the police force, and he said the importance of leveraging modern technology to improve service delivery and welfare administration for officers and their families.
