The Lagos State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended its plenary following a security breach at the assembly premises on Monday.
Tensions flared as security operatives, reportedly from the State Security Service (SSS), stormed the assembly complex and locked the Deputy Speaker’s office before the commencement of the plenary session. This action led to a confrontation between lawmakers and security personnel, with the lawmakers eventually regaining control of the chamber.
In response to the incident, police vans were stationed at the assembly gate to maintain order.
During the plenary session, the legislators addressed the security breach and expressed strong support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda, passing a vote of confidence in her leadership. Meranda, the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, was elected on January 13, 2025, following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa.
The lawmakers also resolved to launch an investigation into the incident and report their findings to President Bola Tinubu and the SSS Director General, Oluwatosin Ajayi.
The Assembly Clerk later clarified that the SSS was invited to maintain order and not to seal any offices. However, the sudden intervention by security operatives has raised concerns over the growing political tensions within the legislature.
Further developments are expected as the Assembly probes the circumstances surrounding the security breach.
