FC Porto forward, Samu Omorodion, narrowly avoided suspension after a punching advertising panel used for post-match interviews in the wake of his side’s 3-1 loss to Gil Vicente in a Portuguese League game played on January 19.
The 20-year-old was initially at risk of suspension for his outburst at the end of the match but the incident was not reported by the referee in his match report.
However, media coverage brought attention of the matter, prompting the Disciplinary Board of the Portuguese Football Federation to initiate proceedings.
And after reviewing the case, Omorodion was fined €612 (approximately N922,000).
The decision was based on the violation of article 167 of the RDLPFP, which covers the use of rude, inappropriate, or incorrect gestures or expressions.
The board cited Omorodion’s action as a breach of the principles and duties outlined in several sections of the disciplinary code.
This is not the first punishment the Spanish forward has faced in relation to the same match.
Omorodion had already been handed a one-match suspension for receiving a red card after the final whistle for using offensive language and gestures towards the referee.
According to referee Fábio Veríssimo’s report, Omorodion confronted him verbally, saying, “You came here to screw us over,” multiple times.
“FC Porto attempted to argue that the phrase “Parece que nos quieren mal, joder!” did not carry the same offensive meaning in Spanish, but the Disciplinary Board maintained the decision, reinforcing the credibility of the referee’s report.
As a result, Omorodion missed FC Porto’s match against Santa Clara on matchday 19, serving his initial suspension.
The fine and disciplinary action serve as a reminder of the high standards expected from players both on and off the field.
