Abuja Charity Marathon Set for April 19: Over 500 Runners to Participate

Date:

The stage is set for the maiden edition of the Abuja Charity Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2025. Organizers announced that over 500 runners and more than 1,000 attendees will participate in the event, aimed at promoting health, unity, and philanthropy in Nigeria’s capital.

The Abuja Charity Marathon is more than just a fitness event; it’s a call for solidarity and social impact. Convener of the marathon, Ambassador Dr. Chris Oko Odey, explained that the initiative seeks to bring together NGOs, corporate bodies, philanthropists, and the general public to run for a cause—uplifting the less privileged and fostering community spirit.

“Beyond the race, we have organized activities such as entertainment, exhibitions, networking opportunities, and community engagement,” Odey said. A special highlight of the event will be a Mixed-Gender Novelty Football Match between Abuja Charity Marathon Ambassadors and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), symbolizing teamwork and unity in driving social change.

Several prominent figures have pledged their support for the marathon. His Royal Majesty Igwe Samuel Asadu Ogadagidi and Her Royal Majesty Queen Mother Dr. Chetachi Ecton Nwoga have been unveiled as the Grand Patron and Grand Matron, respectively.

In her remarks, Queen Mother Dr. Chetachi expressed excitement about her role in the event. “This marathon is not just about running; it’s an opportunity to give back—helping those in need, paying school fees for the underprivileged, and supporting skill acquisition programs. I look forward to this massive event,” she said.

HRM Igwe Samuel Asadu also expressed his appreciation and promised to attend the event in April. “I am delighted to be the Grand Patron of the Abuja Charity Marathon. I look forward to joining everyone on April 19 for this historic event,” he said.

Amb. Dr. Odey also introduced several ambassadors for the 2025 Abuja Charity Marathon. They include prominent figures such as:

  • Amb. Dr. Charles Orifia – Chairman, Inside Abuja Media
  • Amb. Dr. Adaora Onyechere – International Broadcast Journalist
  • Amb. Bob Anasi (MC Bob) – Magnificent House of Humor
  • Amb. Dr. Suleiman Adejo – National President, Messengers of Peace Foundation
  • Amb. Tade Adeyemi (DJ Cool) – DJAN President Emeritus
  • Chief Omenifie Donifie Austin Mena (Baba 20/10) – Legendary Nigerian Musician

The event has also gained support from the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Youths and Social Development.

As excitement builds, celebrities, entertainers, and NGOs have expressed readiness to be part of the marathon. The organizers believe the event will leave a lasting impact on the community, combining fitness with a mission to improve lives.

The Abuja Charity Marathon was conceived to promote physical fitness while encouraging acts of kindness and support for the less privileged. The marathon aligns with research that shows regular exercise boosts energy levels, enhances mood, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases.

With strong backing from key stakeholders and widespread public interest, the April 19 event promises to be a defining moment for charity and unity in Abuja.
