Nigerian Community Leader in the UK Resigns Amid Financial Controversy

Date:

The President of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom on Twitter (X), Mr. Benjamin Kuti, also known as Oluomo of Derby, has announced his resignation following widespread criticism over the management of the group and financial irregularities.

The online community, which boasts over 75,000 members across the UK, has been embroiled in controversy regarding its operations, with members raising concerns over transparency and financial accountability. Kuti, who founded the group, took to Twitter (X) on Thursday to express his decision to step down, acknowledging his responsibility for the current state of the community.

In his resignation post, Kuti stated, “I take full responsibility for the turn of events over the years, and the current unsettling state of the community. I regret my lack of absolute accountability and transparency to the community.” He also confirmed that he would be stepping down as president and would only remain as a member of the company’s steering committee.

The resignation comes after members raised serious allegations about financial mismanagement, with some pointing out discrepancies in the community’s financial reports. Expenditures reportedly rose significantly, from £9,440.41 in 2023 to £68,224.11 in 2024, prompting members to question the authenticity of the financial statements. Some also criticized the expenditure of large sums on events, such as the end-of-year parties, with further allegations of unaccounted administrative costs.

Alongside Kuti’s resignation, other leaders within the community also decided to step down. Ayinde, a volunteer consultant, resigned after completing his work on the community’s financial statements for the period of November 2022 to December 2024. DHK Rullah, another leader, accepted responsibility for the financial irregularities, pledging to refund all the money he had received during his tenure.

Rullah announced that he would make the full refund in installments, directly back into the official account, as a sign of his remorse. He stated, “I want you to know that I take full responsibility for my actions. I understand that my mistakes have consequences, and as a tangible demonstration of my commitment to making amends, I am going to make full refunds of the total monies I received.”

Despite the resignations, many members remain unsatisfied, calling for further scrutiny of the financial operations and greater accountability. Some members have even demanded that the community’s account on Twitter (X) be deleted.

As the community navigates these challenges, there is a clear call for a transparent and fair election process to select a new leadership team that will rebuild trust and ensure the community’s future.
