The Nigerian Police in Abuja has assured residents of intensified operations against attempts to infiltrate the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by infrastructure vandals, criminal gangs, and bandits.
FCT Police Commissioner, CP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, revealed this while speaking to reporters after the first security meeting of the year which was chaired by the Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike.
CP Disu also highlighted recent successes in curbing infrastructure theft, particularly the vandalism of manholes and electricity wires.
He said, “Our operations have been highly successful, and the Minister was pleased with the outcome. We have now reached the stage of profiling those who will be part of the recognized Panteka (scrap metal dealers) to ensure accountability.”
Additionally, he revealed that security forces, including the police, military, and civil defense, have been conducting clearance operations in neighboring states to prevent bandits from advancing into the FCT.
Disu explained, “These operations have significantly contributed to the peace we’ve observed in the past one or two weeks. We are also engaging security operatives from bordering states to ensure a unified approach to tackling crime.”
Fielding questions from newsmen on the unauthorized levies by ‘AMAC Boys’, CP Disu confirmed reports of illegal levies imposed on FCT residents and assured that planned operations will put an end to the menace.
He urged victims to report incidents via the publicized police emergency numbers for swift action.
Addressing concerns over lenient court rulings, CP Disu acknowledged frustration with criminals receiving minor penalties and returning to crime.
He disclosed that meetings with the judiciary have been scheduled to discuss tougher legal measures against offenders.
On the ban on scavengers (Baban Bola) operating within the city remains in force, the police called on residents to report sightings of scavengers in satellite towns for swift enforcement.
“The process of screening and regulating recognized Panteka dealers is ongoing.
“Forms have been distributed, and security vetting has commenced to distinguish lawful operators from criminal elements,” the police Boss disclosed as reassured residents that “the city is safe, and there is no cause for alarm.”
He noted that the notorious ‘one chance’ crime syndicates have been tackled, and ongoing security operations will ensure lasting peace.
“Residents were encouraged to continue their lawful activities without fear.
The security committee, comprising six agencies, has been tasked with sustaining joint operations, ensuring that criminals find no refuge in the FCT,” he continued.
