Iddo Bridge Repairs: Trucks Over 3 Meters Restricted, Diversions in Place

Date:

The Federal Government has announced upcoming repairs for the Iddo Bridge in Lagos and the installation of height restriction barriers to manage traffic during the maintenance work. The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, made the announcement on Saturday, urging all drivers, particularly those operating articulated trucks, to be aware of the new restrictions.

The height restrictions, set to be enforced in the coming days, are aimed at facilitating repairs to the bridge’s defective spans. Kesha explained that trucks taller than three meters would be unable to cross the bridge once the barriers are in place. Drivers approaching the Iddo Bridge, including those traveling from Apapa to Oyingbo, Carter Bridge, or Ijora, are advised to slow down and look out for diversion signs and traffic personnel.

Kesha confirmed that the Iddo Bridge, a crucial 550-meter link in Lagos, required extensive repairs due to defects found in several spans during a structural evaluation. The initial phase of the repairs will focus on heavy vehicles, with an eventual impact on light vehicles as well. The repairs will target the three most defective spans, with the process expected to take approximately six months.

The controller emphasized the importance of patience and cooperation from the motoring public during the repair process. “The ultimate goal is to improve the bridge and provide better service to the public,” she stated.

The Federal Government first imposed vehicular restrictions on the bridge on February 2nd, with plans to reintroduce the height barriers soon. Kesha urged drivers to be alert to traffic diversions and follow the guidance of traffic personnel to ensure a smooth flow of vehicles during the repair period.

As work progresses, the government is calling on all drivers, especially those with heavy-duty vehicles, to cooperate and ensure the safety and efficiency of the ongoing repairs.
