A Bering Air flight with 10 people aboard has gone missing while flying over Alaska, sparking a large-scale search operation. The flight, which departed from Unalakleet and was en route to Nome, was expected to land around 4 pm local time but failed to do so, raising alarms among authorities.
The flight carried nine passengers and one pilot. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department confirmed that search efforts were immediately launched, though challenging weather conditions have severely limited air operations. In a statement, the department explained that poor visibility and inclement weather are hindering air searches, but ground searches are being conducted from Nome and White Mountain. Additionally, the National Guard, Coast Guard, and state troopers have joined in the extensive search operation.
The last communication from the pilot took place when he informed Anchorage Air Traffic Control that he was waiting to enter a holding pattern due to runway clearance issues in Nome. Since then, there has been no further contact.
Authorities have advised the public against conducting independent search efforts, as the hazardous conditions in the area pose significant risks. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department has also urged families to seek support from the Norton Sound Health Corporation during this difficult time.
