11 Chinese Nationals Face Charges Over Alleged Cybercrimes, Cryptocurrency Fraud

Date:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned 11 Chinese nationals and a company, Genting International Co. Ltd., for alleged cyber-terrorism, internet fraud, and other cybercrimes. The suspects were part of a syndicate of 792 individuals arrested during a surprise operation, “Eagle Flush Operation,” in Lagos on December 10, 2024.

The accused, including Liu Ke Fan, Huang Hai Tao, Zhang Kian Feng, and others, were presented before Justice C.J. Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on February 4, 2025. They face charges related to cybercrimes, identity theft, cyberterrorism, and the fraudulent possession of documents, among others.

The charges highlight their alleged involvement in destabilizing Nigeria’s economy and social structure through cyberattacks. One count of the indictment accuses the defendants of using computer systems to carry out activities meant to destabilize Nigeria. Another charge accuses them of engaging in a romance scam and cryptocurrency fraud, fraudulently impersonating individuals online to deceive unsuspecting victims.

The prosecution, led by M.K. Bashir, requested that the defendants be remanded in correctional custody pending trial. Justice Aneke, after hearing the plea of not guilty from the defendants, adjourned the matter for trial on February 21 and March 7, 2025, and ordered their remand at the Ikoyi correctional centre.

This arraignment marks another significant move by the EFCC in its fight against cybercrimes and fraudulent activities that target both individuals and the country’s economy.
