TikTok Strengthens Content Moderation, Removes 2M Videos in Nigeria

TikTok has taken a bold step to reinforce online safety in Nigeria by removing over two million videos between July and September 2024, according to its latest Q3 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report. The social media giant revealed that 99.1% of these videos were taken down within 24 hours of being posted.

In a statement on Tuesday, the company emphasized that the move reflects a global effort with a significant local impact. “With over a billion users worldwide and millions of pieces of content uploaded daily, TikTok continues to invest in technologies that improve content understanding and assess potential risks,” the statement read.

Globally, TikTok removed over 147 million videos within the same period, with 118 million flagged and taken down through automated systems. In Nigeria, 92.1% of the removed content was taken down before any user reported it.

The report highlighted the policy areas most affected by these removals in Nigeria. These included sensitive and mature themes, where 99.4% of violating content was removed proactively, and regulated goods and commercial activities, where 99.1% of videos promoting illegal activities were taken down before user reports. TikTok also emphasized its commitment to protecting users’ mental health, with 99.9% of content related to mental and behavioral health issues removed swiftly.

TikTok’s proactive detection rate stands at 98.2% globally, showcasing the platform’s improved ability to tackle harmful content. This effort is part of its broader mission to create a safe, positive environment where users can express their creativity without encountering harmful content.
