The Lagos State government has commenced the construction of the Lagos State Mental Health Institute, Psychiatric, and Rehabilitation Centre in Ketu Ejirin, Epe Local Government Area. The facility, which will occupy approximately 25 hectares of land, is expected to provide comprehensive care and rehabilitation services for individuals with mental health conditions.
Announced on Wednesday by Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the new institute is designed to support full recovery and reintegration of patients through a combination of clinical, recreational, and vocational programmes.
Gawat’s post on X (formerly Twitter) described the facility as a “1,000-bed centre that will serve as a dedicated rehabilitation home for people with psychiatric illnesses.” He further highlighted the centre’s focus on creating a holistic recovery environment, including recreational and vocational spaces to aid patients’ reintegration into society.
The Lagos State Mental Health Institute is part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to improving mental health services and addressing the growing need for rehabilitation and support for people living with mental health conditions.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has made significant strides in healthcare development across Lagos, with the new mental health institute poised to set a benchmark for psychiatric care and rehabilitation in Nigeria. Once completed, the centre will offer much-needed relief to families and individuals affected by mental health challenges, providing a safe space for treatment, recovery, and personal growth.
Further details on the project’s timeline and operational commencement are expected to be announced soon.
