Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf, has publicly expressed his gratitude for the support he has received following his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The arrest, which took place last Wednesday at his Abuja residence, stems from allegations of a N4 billion fraud during his tenure at NHIS.
Yusuf, a renowned professor of haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation, faces accusations of inflating the ICT budget from N4.975 billion to N8.7 billion and approving payments beyond his designated approval limit.
He is also under investigation for awarding contracts without adhering to due procurement processes.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Yusuf reassured his supporters that he was in good health, despite being taken into custody around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The former NHIS boss emphasized that he was at peace with the situation, quoting a verse from the Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, which reflects his belief in enduring hardship with strength.
“Greetings from Kuje Prison,” Yusuf was quoted by Abu-bakar’s handle @abbkar_ai on X.
“I sincerely appreciate everyone for your support and concern. I am in good health in the VIP section, where we eat, worship peacefully, and stay away from the noise of the larger crowd. I have ample time to rest, sleep, and study.”
Yusuf further referenced the Quranic verse, “Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear,” sharing that he had long ago committed to bearing the burden of speaking out against injustice.
He expressed feeling more at peace and content than ever, despite the difficult circumstances.
“My family is in good health and remains strong through this ordeal. I appreciate everyone,” he added.
His arrest is part of an ongoing investigation by the EFCC into financial misconduct during his leadership at NHIS.
The EFCC has been scrutinising his role in alleged mismanagement of public funds, particularly in relation to the inflated ICT budget and controversial contract awards.
As the investigation continues, Prof. Yusuf remains in custody, maintaining his stance that he is ready to speak the truth and face any consequences.
