From Burna Boy to Tems: Nigerian Stars Winning Big at the Grammys

Date:

Nigerian artists and those of Nigerian heritage have continued to dominate the global music scene, with several winning prestigious Grammy Awards and putting Afrobeat and other genres on the world map. These wins highlight Nigeria’s growing influence in the global music industry and cement its position as a powerhouse for cultural export.

Among the trailblazers is Burna Boy, who became the first Nigerian solo artist to win a Grammy for his critically acclaimed album Twice as Tall in 2021. The album, which won the Best Global Music Album, was celebrated for its fusion of Afrobeat, reggae, and pop, earning Burna Boy widespread recognition and solidifying his status as the “African Giant.”

Wizkid, another Afrobeat icon, won a Grammy for his collaboration with Beyoncé on Brown Skin Girl from the Lion King: The Gift album, which clinched the Best Music Video category in 2021. Wizkid’s win was a landmark moment, as it demonstrated how collaborations between African and international artists could create magic and reach global audiences.

The success story continued with Tems, who made history in 2023 by becoming the first female Nigerian artist to win a Grammy. Tems earned the award for her contribution to the hit song Wait for U by Future featuring Drake, which won in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category. Her unique blend of Afrobeat and R&B has made her one of the most sought-after voices in contemporary music.

Veteran Nigerian drummer and composer Sikiru Adepoju was also a pioneer, winning a Grammy in 1991 for his work with Planet Drum, a project led by Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. Adepoju’s percussion skills introduced Nigerian traditional rhythms to the global stage, inspiring future generations of African artists.

Femi and Made Kuti, sons of the legendary Fela Kuti, have also been multiple Grammy nominees, showcasing how Afrobeat, created by their father, continues to thrive globally. While they have not yet secured a win, their nominations are a testament to the genre’s lasting impact and growing recognition.

These Grammy wins and nominations signal a new era for Nigerian artists and their music. With Afrobeat’s rise and increasing collaborations with global stars, Nigeria’s influence on the international music scene is only set to grow further. As more artists receive global accolades, the world continues to tune in to the unique sound and rhythm of Nigeria.
