A recent investigation by BudgIT, a civic tech organization promoting accountability and transparency in public finance, has revealed that over N2.4 billion allocated for federal projects in 2023 has been disbursed without any contractor commencing work on the sites.
According to BudgIT’s service delivery platform, @TrackaNG, the payments were made to 17 contractors for 15 federal projects across nine states, yet there is no evidence of work being carried out at any of the project locations.
The findings have raised serious concerns about the transparency and accountability of government spending on public projects. These projects, which were intended to improve infrastructure and services for citizens, remain stalled despite significant funds being released.
In its statement, BudgIT emphasized the critical role civil society plays in ensuring accountability. “This discovery highlights the need for stricter monitoring of public funds to prevent misuse and ensure Nigerians benefit from these projects,” the organization said.
BudgIT called on the Federal Government, relevant agencies, and anti-corruption bodies to investigate the situation and ensure that the funds are properly accounted for. Citizens are also encouraged to actively engage in tracking government projects to demand accountability and transparency.
The organization promised to continue monitoring the affected projects and provide updates to the public. @TrackaNG has been instrumental in uncovering cases of abandoned or delayed projects and advocating for responsible governance.
This discovery serves as a reminder of the importance of civic engagement and the need for stronger oversight mechanisms to safeguard public funds.
