Mikel Shares Insight Into Mourinho’s Influence on His Career, Personal Life

Date:

Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has opened up about his close relationship with legendary manager José Mourinho, revealing how the Portuguese tactician influenced both his football career and personal life.

Speaking on his Obi One podcast, the 37-year-old Nigerian footballer shared details of the special bond he had with Mourinho during their time at Chelsea, where Mikel joined in 2006. While many know Mourinho for his success on the pitch, Mikel highlighted the manager’s significant role in shaping his character and decisions off the field.

Mikel explained that Mourinho wasn’t just concerned with his performance during matches but also with how he managed his finances. “He always asks me, what did you do with your salary? Did you put it in the bank? Did you buy a house?” Mikel recalled. “He was always trying to find out what I was doing, and for me, he made sure I kept my feet on the ground. I was always humble and respectful.”

One of the most memorable pieces of advice Mourinho gave Mikel occurred after he bought a Range Rover with his first paycheck at Chelsea. “I remember when I joined the club, I got my first salary and went and bought a Range Rover,” Mikel said. “He saw it and told me to return it. He told me to get a mini.”

The advice served as a reminder of Mourinho’s emphasis on maintaining humility despite newfound wealth and fame. Mikel, who spent 11 seasons at Chelsea, went on to become one of the club’s most decorated players, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the UEFA Champions League, and the Europa League.

Mourinho’s influence on Mikel’s life extended beyond football, as the manager’s guidance played a crucial role in helping the Nigerian star navigate his career while staying grounded.
