The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a comprehensive guide on how Nigerians can report harassment by loan apps as the number of complaints about aggressive tactics by lenders continues to rise.
Online loan apps have become a popular option for Nigerians seeking quick financial relief. However, some loan providers have been accused of resorting to unethical and aggressive tactics when borrowers delay repayment. These tactics include sending threatening or shameful messages and, in some extreme cases, sharing personal photos with the borrower’s contacts, leading to severe emotional distress and public humiliation.
The FCCPC has taken notice of these disturbing reports and has reiterated its commitment to protecting consumer rights. In a statement over the weekend, the Commission outlined clear steps for Nigerians to report any instances of harassment they experience from loan apps.
To lodge a complaint, Nigerians can choose from several options:
- Email: Complaints can be sent directly to the FCCPC’s email address at contact@fccpc.gov.ng.
- Social Media: Consumers can message the FCCPC directly on X (formerly Twitter) for immediate attention.
- Website: The FCCPC website (fccpc.gov.ng) has a “File a Complaint” section where individuals can fill out a form detailing their issue. The form requires basic information, including the name of the loan app, the loan amount, the contact details, and a brief description of the harassment experienced.
The FCCPC’s call for action aims to provide Nigerians with a platform to safeguard their rights and ensure that consumer protection laws are enforced. The Commission has also stressed that it will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary measures to curb the harassment by loan apps.
This initiative is part of the FCCPC’s broader efforts to create a safer financial environment for consumers and hold lenders accountable for any actions that violate consumer rights.
