Super Eagles stars Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu were the heroes for Southampton who secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday, ending a six-match losing streak in the Premier League.
The win was Southampton’s second win of the season.
Aribo put the Saints ahead in the first half with a first-time strike that caught Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric off guard.
However, Ipswich responded before the break, as Liam Delap raced past Saints captain Jan Bednarek and fired a low shot past Aaron Ramsdale to level the score.
The second half saw Ipswich dominate possession and create several chances, with Omari Hutchinson, Julio Enciso, and Delap all unable to convert. Despite the pressure, Southampton held firm.
The decisive moment came when Kamaldeen Sulemana’s shot was parried by Muric, and Onuachu was quick to pounce on the rebound, scoring the winner.
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Southampton, who had struggled throughout the season, dropping 20 points from winning positions.
The win also provided a glimmer of hope, with Onuachu’s goal being his second in the Premier League for the club.
Southampton’s defense showed resilience despite injuries to Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jack Stephens, and debutants Welington and Albert Gronbaek impressed.
The team’s effort in securing all three points was a morale booster as they aim to improve their form for the remainder of the campaign.
