In a major financial boost for Nigerian youth corps members, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has announced that corps members will start receiving a monthly allowance of ₦77,000 beginning in February 2025.
Speaking to the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members in Katsina State, Ahmed confirmed that the increment has been captured in the 2025 Federal Government budget, ensuring a significant rise from the current ₦33,000 stipend.
“This month (January) has already ended, but once the budget is passed, by next month (February), you will start receiving ₦77,000 instead of the usual ₦33,000,” he stated.
Ahmed urged corps members to reciprocate the government’s gesture by dedicating themselves to national service, contributing meaningfully to their host communities.
Reaffirming the NYSC’s commitment to corps members’ welfare and security, Ahmed assured that no corps member would be posted to areas facing security threats.
“We will not send our corps members to wherever we have challenges of security threats. Wherever we send them, they should be assured that the place is safe and secure for them to serve,” he added.
The salary adjustment comes at a time when rising inflation and economic hardships have made cost-of-living increases a crucial concern for Nigerians. This increment is expected to provide corps members with improved financial stability during their one-year mandatory service.
The NYSC allowance increment has sparked excitement among corps members and prospective participants, with many viewing it as a positive step towards youth empowerment and national development.
