Nigerian music legend Innocent “2Baba” Idibia is facing heavy backlash from fellow celebrities and social media users after confirming his separation from his wife, Annie Idibia, earlier this week.
On Monday, 2Baba shared a post revealing that he and Annie had been separated for a while and were currently filing for divorce.
He added that he would soon release a formal statement to explain the situation, stating that while his personal life was no one’s business, he wanted to clear his name.
He said, “I and Annie Macaulay have been separated for a while now, and currently filing for divorce. I would grant a press release soon to say my story.
“Not because it is anyone’s right to know about my personal life but because I love my people and I need them to know my innocence or offence. Stay blessed my people. I love you all.”
However, the singer later posted another message claiming that his Instagram account had been hacked, which contradicted his earlier statement.
“My Instagram account has been hacked, efforts are being carried out to take back control. #onelove!” he wrote.
But in a surprising twist, 2Baba posted two videos in which he denied the hacking claim, affirming that his previous statements were indeed his own.
“Yo, bless some more people. Nobody hacked my accounts. Na me yarn weytin I yarn,” he stated in one of the videos.
“Yo, my people man, nobody hacked my account. Nah me talk weytin I wan talk. You understand? I come in peace,” he added.
The singer’s confirmation of the separation has sparked a wave of criticism from celebrities, including TV personality Toke Makinwa, who expressed her disapproval of 2Baba’s decision to air his marital issues publicly.
“This is wrong on all levels, you should be ashamed for bringing this here. Bring it on, if you think she is alone; let me tell you here that you will have to fight us all,” Makinwa wrote on Instagram.
Makinwa also emphasized the need for women to stand up against injustice, stating that issues like this affect all women.
“Nobody is asking anybody to stay in a situation that’s not serving them any purpose anymore.
“By all means, leave if you must but why bring this online, at this very moment? We know what is going on behind closed doors,” she added.
Actress Iyabo Ojo also weighed in, calling for sensitivity and compassion in handling such matters.
“When love fades, please prioritise your children’s well-being. Never abandon loved ones in their darkest moments, even if separation or divorce is inevitable.
“Sensitive issues shouldn’t be publicly aired; social media sometimes disregards the well-being of those involved.
“2Baba, I adore you both, but this timing was off. It’s so unempathetic. I’m disappointed. This storm will pass,” Ojo posted.
Nollywood actress Mary Remmy Njoku also criticized 2Baba’s public handling of the situation.
“Bro, Annie has a family o! Your sisters-in-law are many, and we’ve stayed quiet out of respect for her tough choices, but since you’ve decided to humiliate her at her lowest, no wahala.
“It’s your choice. Just make sure she’s healthy and okay. Because when the time comes, we’ll have plenty of questions for you!” she wrote.
Uche Elendu expressed her disappointment with 2Baba’s lack of accountability and sensitivity.
“No love, No accountability, No loyalty, No culture, No bond, No memory, No decorum, No respect, No empathy.
I am so disappointed at this betrayal and insensitive public announcement from 2Face. At a time like this, love does not count errors,” Elendu wrote.
Big Brother Naija star, Nina Ivy, also criticised the decision to take personal matters public.
“I can never, ever, ever be with a man who seeks public validation-never. A man who would dare to use my lowest moments to taunt me on social media?
Not. A man who wouldn’t prioritise or support my mental health? Never, ever. Emphasis on never,” Ivy posted.
Despite the criticism, some supporters of 2Baba have rallied behind him, noting that only those involved in the relationship truly understand the situation.
As the public response continues to unfold, many are questioning the timing and impact of airing such personal matters on social media.
