Akpabio Calls for Immediate Removal of Retired Workers on Extended Tenure

Date:

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed strong opposition to the practice of National Assembly management workers seeking extensions to their service tenures after reaching retirement age. He stated that such extensions breach public service rules and must be discontinued immediately.

Speaking in Abuja while hosting the outgoing chairman and members of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), Akpabio directed the commission to urgently remove any management workers benefiting from such extensions.

“This practice violates established public service regulations,” Akpabio asserted. “I urge the NASC to ensure that workers attempting to extend their stay in office beyond retirement are removed without delay.”

The Senate President also used the occasion to commend the outgoing NASC leadership for their service over the past five years. While acknowledging their contributions, he highlighted the need to address lapses observed during their tenure.

“It’s a moment of mixed feelings as we bid farewell to an experienced hand like you. However, as you hand over to the Secretary of the Commission, I must point out that lapses observed during the past few years should not be ignored,” Akpabio said.

The outgoing NASC chairman and members were concluding their five-year tenure, with their departure paving the way for new appointments by the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Akpabio’s stance reflects his commitment to upholding public service rules and ensuring that the management of the National Assembly operates within ethical and regulatory boundaries.
