Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and assistant coach of Akwa United Football Club, Moses Effiong, has passed away at the age of 65 in the United States after a prolonged battle with illness.
Effiong’s death, which occurred on Sunday, January 26, 2025, comes just three months after he celebrated his 65th birthday.
The former footballer had sought medical treatment abroad in hopes of overcoming the ailment that had been affecting his health.
The news of Effiong’s passing was shared in a statement from the Chairman of Akwa United, Paul Bassey, who expressed deep sorrow at the loss of the football icon.
“Moses Effiong was not only a core professional football coach but also a wonderful family man and a gentleman in every sense. His dedication and commitment to his work were remarkable,” Bassey said in the statement released by the club’s Media Director, Mfon Patrick.
Effiong was a key member of the Nigerian national team that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.
He later went on to contribute to the development of the sport as an assistant coach at Akwa United, where he was admired for his leadership and mentoring of players.
The club has expressed heartfelt condolences to Effiong’s family and loved ones.
“The Management, staff, and players of Akwa United Football Club regret to announce the sudden demise of our goalkeeper coach and a member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, Effiong Moses (MON),” the statement read.
Effiong’s contributions to Nigerian football, both on and off the pitch, will be remembered fondly by fans, players, and colleagues alike.
