Cesc Fàbregas has strongly disagreed with former teammate Mikel Obi’s recent comments regarding N’Golo Kanté’s career, labeling them as “disrespectful.”
Mikel, during an appearance on his ObiOne podcast, where he ranked defensive midfielders, the former Nigerian captain controversially stated that Kanté only had two good seasons in his career.
Fàbregas was quick to defend the Frenchman, reeling out the many accolades Kanté has accumulated over his career, which far exceed Mikel’s narrow assessment.
In an interview with RMC Sports, Fàbregas faulted Mikel’s statement, stating, “I think that statement is disrespectful against Kanté, because Kanté had far more than two good seasons in Leicester, Chelsea, and France.”
Fàbregas went on to detail some of Kanté’s standout achievements, which include winning the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016, followed by another league title with Chelsea in 2017.
Kanté also earned the Player of the Season award in 2017, and helped secure France’s 2018 World Cup victory.
Fàbregas did not stop there, he pointed out Kanté’s impressive club achievements, including winning the Europa League in 2019 and dominating the midfield in Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League triumph.
According to the Como coach, Kanté’s consistency and influence on the field have been far more significant than Mikel’s comments would suggest.
The debate over Kanté’s legacy has resurfaced following Mikel’s ranking of defensive midfielders, and Fàbregas’ defense of his former colleague serves as a reminder of the impact Kanté has had on both club and international football.
With multiple major trophies and individual accolades, the Frenchman’s reputation as one of the best midfielders of his generation remains firmly intact.
