Moses Effiong, a former Nigerian international goalkeeper and assistant coach of Akwa United Football Club, has passed away at the age of 65 after battling a prolonged illness in the United States.
The news of his death, which occurred on Sunday, January 26, 2025, was confirmed by Akwa United’s Chairman, Paul Bassey, in a statement issued through the club’s Media Director, Mfon Patrick. Effiong’s demise came just three months after celebrating his 65th birthday and expressing optimism about his recovery.
“The management, staff, and players of Akwa United Football Club regret to announce the sudden demise of our goalkeeper coach and a member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, Effiong Moses (MON),” the statement read.
Paul Bassey described Effiong as a “complete gentleman, a core professional football coach, and a wonderful family man,” highlighting his dedication and commitment to every role he undertook.
Effiong was celebrated for his contributions to Nigerian football both as a player and a coach. As a key member of Nigeria’s 1980 AFCON-winning team, he etched his name in the annals of the nation’s football history.
