A Magistrate Court in Ilesa, Osun State, has ordered Rhoda Adu to pay a total of N150,000 in damages after she failed to visit her boyfriend, Olapitan Sola, despite receiving N3,000 for transportation.
The incident unfolded when Mr. Olapitan sent the agreed-upon transport fare to Ms. Adu, but after receiving the money, she switched off her phone and did not show up as promised. Mr. Olapitan was unable to contact her, leading to feelings of being defrauded and emotionally distressed.
Feeling aggrieved, Mr. Olapitan reported the matter to the Ayeso Police Station, where the police investigated the situation. Evidence, including the N3,000 transfer and WhatsApp messages exchanged between the two, was presented in court.
Magistrate Akogun Oludare, presiding over the case, ruled that Ms. Adu must refund the N3,000 transport fare to Mr. Olapitan. In addition, she was ordered to pay N100,000 for breaching their agreement and another N50,000 in special damages for the emotional distress she caused.
The court emphasized that the ruling serves as a deterrent to others who may consider engaging in similar misconduct, highlighting the importance of honoring agreements and commitments.
This decision has drawn attention as a rare legal consequence for a personal relationship dispute, further underlining the seriousness of trust and integrity in any form of agreement.
