The Sokoto State Hisbah Commission has apprehended eight individuals for allegedly organising an election to crown the “best sex performers” in the state.
The controversial event reportedly took place on Monday evening at the Plus Centre along Maiduguri Road in Sokoto. Acting on intelligence, Hisbah officials interrupted the gathering, where participants had reportedly completed two rounds of voting before the intervention.
Dr. Abubakar Usman Rabah, the Deputy Commander of Operations for the commission, revealed details of the operation in a video shared on Facebook. “Upon receiving the information, we deployed plain-clothed personnel to the venue, who confirmed the event. Eight suspects were arrested, though two of our operatives were injured, and their vehicle was damaged during the operation,” Rabah explained.
The identities of the event organisers remain unknown, but Rabah disclosed that some soldiers had allegedly claimed the suspects were their associates. The commission has expressed concern over what it sees as growing cases of immorality.
“This is not the first time we are dealing with such incidents. In the past, we’ve faced situations where soldiers claimed ownership of confiscated items, including alcohol, only for investigations to reveal otherwise,” a senior Hisbah official stated.
Rabah issued a stern warning to event centres in the state, cautioning them against hosting activities that undermine public morality. He emphasized that the government would not hesitate to shut down venues found culpable.
The arrests have sparked discussions in the state, with many residents expressing shock over the nature of the event. Authorities have promised to continue investigations to identify the organisers and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
