Ogun State’s efforts to establish a naval base and dockyard in its riverine areas have gained momentum with the visit of Rear Admiral Mike Oamen, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, to the state government offices.
During the meeting, state officials briefed Rear Admiral Oamen on the progress of the initiative, which began under the leadership of former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo. Recognizing the strategic importance of enhancing naval capabilities in Ogun’s waterways, a committee comprising representatives from the Nigerian Navy and the state government was established to evaluate potential sites for the project.
After extensive assessments, a 100-hectare parcel of land in Ogun Waterside was identified as the ideal location. The state government has finalized all formalities, including waiving fees and charges amounting to several billions of naira, and has forwarded the Certificate of Occupancy to the Naval Headquarters.
This collaboration aims to boost maritime security, economic development, and the operational capacity of the Nigerian Navy in the region. Rear Admiral Oamen’s visit underscores the Navy’s commitment to advancing the project.
The naval base and dockyard are expected to provide strategic and economic benefits, strengthening Ogun State’s position as a key player in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
