Kaduna Peace Deal Shaken as Bandits Abduct Traditional Ruler, Over 25 Others

Date:

The peace deal championed by’s administration in Kaduna State faces renewed scrutiny after a series of violent incidents, including the abduction of over 25 villagers, including a traditional ruler and his wife, in Kajuru Local Government Area.

Armed bandits attacked Gurgu village on Sunday, seizing the traditional ruler, Halidu Galamida, his wife, Martha Galadima, and 23 others. Local sources confirmed that seven residents sustained injuries during the raid. Many of the kidnapped were reportedly mourners attending a burial.

In a related incident, bandits struck Iduh village in Kauru Local Government Area on Monday, killing one person and abducting several others. Meanwhile, hostages taken from Alheri Baptist Church in Chikun Local Government Area two weeks ago remain in captivity, intensifying concerns about security in the region.

The resurgence of attacks casts doubt on the effectiveness of the government’s peace initiative, which was designed to address the long-standing insecurity in Kaduna State. Critics, including columnist Dele Sobowale, have questioned the impact of the peace process, despite efforts by the government to defend its strategy.

In November 2024, Governor Sani had granted pardons to’repentant’ bandits, claiming that dialogue and trust-building had led many senior bandit leaders to lay down their arms. These individuals are reportedly undergoing a rehabilitation program aligned with international standards of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, aimed at reintegrating them as productive members of society.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to achieving lasting peace, emphasizing fairness to all, including farmers, herders, and traders. “Through numerous meetings and extensive discussions, we have built bridges of trust,” Governor Sani said, adding that the government would continue to welcome those who seek peace while taking decisive action against perpetrators of violence.

However, the latest wave of abductions and violence highlights persistent challenges to stability in the region. The state government has yet to issue a formal statement addressing the recent attacks.
