In a significant move to enhance technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial education, the Nigerian Government has approved the establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
A letter dated January 9, 2025, from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, confirmed the development. The letter stated that the establishment of the polytechnic aligns with the Federal Government’s national policy to ensure every state in the federation is home to at least one federal polytechnic.
The letter, which was officially received by the office of the FCT Minister on January 16, 2025, requested Wike to propose locations for both the temporary and permanent sites for the polytechnic in Gwarinpa. Dr. Alausa also mentioned that a technical team from the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) would visit the proposed sites for inspection. Based on the findings of the team, further approvals will be issued.
In the communication, the Minister of Education also hinted at the possibility of taking over an existing tertiary institution in the area if deemed suitable for the establishment of the polytechnic.
The new polytechnic is expected to play a key role in driving the government’s goal of expanding access to quality technical education across the country, further promoting skill development and entrepreneurship among Nigerian youths.
The initiative, which highlights the federal government’s commitment to educational reform, is poised to bring about significant benefits to the FCT and its residents, offering new educational opportunities and contributing to the country’s economic growth.
